Apple planning tablet computer?

According to Apple Insider, the answer is “yes”. Apple, apparently energized by the success of the iPhone and iPod Touch, is thought to firmly pursue plans to release a full scale tablet device. Leveraging the multi-touch interface made popular by the iPhone, the company is certainly capable of releasing a revolutionary take on the tablet-PC form factor. But will it ever see the light of day? Rumors of an Apple Newton renaissance have been swirling for years, so we’re inclined to throw this in the rumor bin for now. That said, if Apple did decide to enter the Ultra Mobile PC market, we wouldn’t be the least bit upset. Integrated HSPDA, multi-touch interface, OS X….we’re drooling already. This product is apparently on track for a 2008 release, but we wouldn’t hold our breath…just yet, at least.

Apple working on a multi-touch-based Newton successor?

This one is purely in the realm of rumor, folks, but AppleInsider is now reporting the tantalizing detail that Apple is currently working on a multi-touch-based successor to its Newton handheld. As the story goes, Apple has actually had a “small team of engineers” working on the project for the past 18 months, during which time they were occasionally forced to put the project on hold in order to help get the iPhone out the door on time. Now, with the iPhone out of the way, AppleInsider says it’s “full steam ahead” on the “modern day Newton.” Delving even further into the rumor mill, AppleInsider says the device will about 1.5 times the size of the iPhone, and sport a 720×480 display that fills nearly the entire surface of the unit (no surprise there). What’s more, it seems that the device is intended to compete as much with UMPCs as with PDAs (something the original Newton’s already taken a shot at) and, if the rumors are to be believed, it could be released “sometime in the first half of 2008,” with a possible announcement as soon as MacWorld in January.

Truphone demos VoIP (Voice over IP) for iPhone

Are you ready to have your brain go flying out of the back of your skull? If you said yes, be prepared to lose your mind… repeatedly. One of the Holy Grails / Seven Wonders of the iPhone World has been loosed upon the Earth today, namely: VoIP. According to a company called Truphone, they have unlocked the secret of IP telephony on the iPhone, and demonstrated said ability today at DEMOfall 07 in San Diego. Executing commands via the Terminal (i.e., on a phone which had been Jailbreak-ed), Truphone CEO James Tagg was able to call another mobile phone using only an IP connection — all without breaking the SIM lock. According to the company, the software is still in beta, but they soon plan to have a version which will simplify activation, and allow seamless switching between WiFi and SIM use. Clearly, an exciting development for iPhone users, but a cringe-inducing situation for AT&T. Check the video after the break to see it all in action.

Apple is not looking to “proactively disable” unlocked-iPhones

Shortly after Apple released a brief statement yesterday regarding iPhone modifications and their impacts on warranties, the firm’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing has stepped up to clarify a few issues. In a recent interview, Phil Schiller was quoted as saying that the upcoming software update “has nothing to do with proactively disabling a phone that is unlocked or hacked.” Furthermore, he added that it was “unfortunate that some programs have caused damage to the iPhone software,” but he noted that “Apple could not be responsible for… those consequences.” All in all, it doesn’t sound like Apple is changing its stance, but it seems safe to say that Cupertino won’t be listening to any crying should subsequent updates render your hacked iPhone useless.

O2 iPhone

O2 is the first network provider to get the iPhone outside of the US, so what’s new on the UK’s very own iPhone? Well, it turns out, not much. In simple terms, it’s almost identical to the US version, albeit running the 1.1.1 firmware version features of which we’ve already seen on the iPod Touch. You’ll notice the iTunes WiFi Store icon, and an O2-UK network symbol up top. If you look carefully, you’ll see that the E logo for EDGE is missing: we guess that 30% network coverage on O2 don’t quite stretch inside the Apple Store. Along with the 1.1.1 firmware comes double tap quick access to currently playing songs, options for closed captioning on videos, and rather oddly, user selection options for carrier (we thought this was an exclusive?) There’s also support for European language keyboards, and an option for turning off EDGE roaming. All in all, a rather predictable update for the UK.

Apple announces European iPhone; no 3G, we shed tears of sadness

We hoped, we wished, we prayed, we even sacrificed small animals, yet Apple has silently told us to get lost, and crushed our dreams of a 3G iPhone. For the moment, at least. Just announced moments ago, Apple has officially layed out the launch details for the United Kingdom’s iPhone. As rumored and reported, it was O2 who clinched the deal at the last moment. The European iPhone does not differ at all from the U.S. version, and will go on sale starting November, 9th. We still love you, Apple. Just give us the little software updates we ask for.

Apple iPhone hits O2 in the UK on November 9th

Ending months of intense, practically insane speculation, Apple just confirmed its first European carrier for the iPhone: O2 is scoring exclusive UK rights to the hotly contested device, and will be launching it on November 9th for £269 including VAT. Unlimited data comes standard with with £35, £45 and £55 voice plans. Just like the rumors (finally) predicted, Carphone Warehouse is being pulled in to beef up retail presence for O2, with 1300 retail locations, each with an “expert” on the iPhone. Naturally, Apple’s not doing anything fancy here, and is announcing the same old EDGE phone we know and love here in the States — shattering the 2007 3G pipe dreams of millions of Europeans — but has made up for it slightly by scoring free WiFi for O2 iPhone users at the 7,500 hotspots serviced by Cloud in the UK. Those hotspots will certainly come in handy when trapesing through O2’s EDGE-deficient network — only 30% of the country will be covered by launch time. Of course, if you aren’t keen on Visual Voicemail or Apple’s blessing, there are certainly plenty of unlocked iPhones to be had between now and launch.

O2 store down, iPhone launch imminent

We don’t pay too close attention to how frequently the O2 online store goes down; hell, we only pay attention to the Apple store’s ups and downs because every time Apple takes it offline we get about a hundred tips letting us know. But tonight the store-down moment goes to O2, which supposedly pretty much has the lock on the iPhone (pun not intended) in the UK. Check back here shortly, we’ll have all the live coverage you could possibly need (and then some).

iTunes 7.4.2 hits, say goodbye to DIY iPhone ringtones (for a while)

Apple might be neutral towards third-party iPhone software development, but it’s apparently downright hostile when it comes to DIY ringtones — just 10 days after releasing iTunes 7.4.1, which killed off an easy way of getting your own ringtones on the iPhone, the company has dropped iTunes 7.4.2, which obsoletes the latest ways of getting your own sounds on the phone, including popular apps MakeiPhoneRingtones and iToner. DIY ringtones still make it into iTunes’ ringtones folder, but aren’t copied over to the iPhone — a problem we’re certain hackers will get around sooner rather than later. C’mon Apple, we know you’re smarter than to play these cat-and-mouse games.

Update: Well, that didn’t take long. According to Shadowfax in the MacRumors forums, all you’ve got to do to get ringtones back is flip a metadata bit and change the file extension back to .m4r — something MacRumors says is more indicative of Apple “solidifying the format” than actively trying to kill ringtones. We’re also hearing iToner still works, although we’ve yet to confirm. Check the read link for Shadowfox’s instructions.

BMW’s iPhone runs on Vodafone (not T-Mobile) at Frankfurt Motor Show

So, if you believe the rumor mill, then T-Mobile (Deutsche Telekom) has clinched the iPhone for Germany right? Perhaps, but that hasn’t stopped BMW from showing off this picture of the iPhone running with Voda…(fone) at their Frankfurt Motor Show website. Now we’d chalk this up to some speculative Photoshopping on BMW’s part but we also received a tip from a reader claiming to have seen a Vodafone iPhone in the BMW area over the weekend. What the? Anyone at the autoshow care to sneak out some snaps?

Update: Meanwhile… our readers have united on the edge of Occam’s razor with the following conclusion: international roaming.
