AT&T Free WiFi for iPhones on Hold, Again

Trying to understand what AT&T’s plans are with regards to free WiFi for the iPhone is like trying to understand a Galvatron comment. Be sure you have a healthy dose of Tylenol on deck and expect to walk away perplexed. First it went live, then it was dropped – then it went up again, then back down – then a May 15 launch was scheduled, then it was missed. The following internal memo was circulated yesterday at AT&T:

The iPhone Wi-Fi offer that was scheduled to launch today has been canceled. Nothing has been announced by the company to our customers and will not impact existing customers. Additional communication will be provided if the status the project changes.

So at some point, AT&T will be offering free WiFi for iPhone users and inadvertently to anyone with a laptop and enough savvy to search Google and spoof their system with Safari and an active iPhone number. Then again, perhaps the latter half of that statement is the cause of the repeated delays.

Orange lands broad iPhone distro deal too

We’ll make this brief. Orange spokesperson Therese Wenger told the SDA news agency that it has secured rights to release the iPhone (3G version, presumably) in Switzerland and more than 10 other countries — take that Swisscom! Other countries include Austria, Belgium, Poland, Portugal, and Romania. And France of course where it’s already on sale. See, that was quick and leaves room for a dozen or so other iPhone related announcements today.

New Version Of Google Reader For iPhone

iPhone for Google Reader (Beta)

After launching a new feature for desktop users, the Google Reader team is experimenting with a new version of Google Reader for iPhone users.

(Official Google Reader Blog) To make our (and your) Reader iPhone experience better, we wanted to really take advantage of the iPhone’s capabilities. Today we’re releasing a new beta version of Reader designed for the iPhone and other mobile phones with advanced browsers. You can use it by visiting http://www.google.com/reader/i/ on your phone.

This new version is designed to offer many of the same features as the desktop, while making it quick and easy to act on items. If you’ve used list view, then it should be familiar to you. Scan the titles for an item that interests you, tap and it expands in place. Starring, sharing, and keeping unread are done in place, so you never have to leave the list view or refresh the page. We think it’s a very fast way to power through your reading list.

The first thing many iPhone users will notice is that the new beta version will display 15 articles/post “snippets” instead of the usual 9, as well as the ability to see the articles/posts underneath (or above) the one that you are currently reading.

Starring the articles is also easier, as iPhone users can now actually tap the star tab next to the story, instead of trying to place their “fat fingers” on the tiny add star link at the end of the article.

iPhone users can also mark a feed as unread (on the Keep unread link), a helpful feature that is missing from the current version. Last but not least (as far as useful features go), the iPhone version recognizes YouTube video’s, and places a link instead of Safari’s “we can’t play flash video’s because we are not a real browser” image.

Unfortunately the new beta version of Google Reader loads a little slower than the previous one on Wifi which means that users on AT&T’s EDGE are going to have to display more patience than usual.

Even though users can check out the notes that they have shared, their still seems to be no way for iPhone users to share a note alongside of an article, which (in this authors opinion) makes the notes feature more like a tease (as there is no way to add anything interesting via the iPhone).

All in all, the beta is not half bad, although hopefully Google will make the iPhone version as powerful as its desktop version–not to mention roll out a similar version for other smart phones (like Black Berry’s) as well.

O2 Done with the iPhone, For Now

The iPhone has recently seen price drops in a variety of countries including the UK. Apparently, said price adjustments caused a bit more of a rush amongst O2 customers than had been expected. As a matter of fact, O2 has run out of iPhones a good month and a half or so before the 3G iPhone is expected to drop. 8GB iPhones, done. 16GB iPhones, done. Apparently 02 is wiping its hands of the iPhone until the new model is issued, likely next month. Seems like quite the peculiar move, losing a month of iPhone sales that is. The iPhone is, after all, one of the most exclusive and fastest selling phones in the UK. Could this mean that the 3G iPhone may be released in the UK ahead of the US? Yeah, we doubt it too.

iPhone’s Safari YouTube support

Well, we just started really messing around with the latest iPhone SDK and OS, and came across something that’s pretty cool. Finally we have YouTube support in the web browser! Don’t get extremely excited though; this is not Flash support. It’s a plugin that enables you to click on an embedded YouTube video, which will then in turn open up the movie player and stream the video. This has worked with every single video we’ve tried so far, but does not work on YouTube.com as that checks for an installed Flash player. Check out the little bit we recorded above to see it in action

Apple Issues Fifth Version of iPhone SDK and Firmware

We sure are getting close to the east side of that road map pictured above. Could this be the final release before the 3G iPhone makes its debut? Apple has just made a fifth version of its iPhone SDK and 2.0 version firmware available to developers. So far in terms of changes in 2.0 beta 5, the only noteworthy items we’ve heard are that DRM music is now supported again and the Contacts search feature is now available in the the simulator (and presumably the firmware). We’ll have more for you soon, no worries.

Apple and AT&T to launch iPhone 3G a lot sooner than we think?

Well, here’s the story. Let’s start this off by saying that we think this might be a little bit too early, but you never know with Apple. Anyways, we told y’all last year before the first iPhone launched that AT&T employees were not allowed to take vacations from June 15th to July 15th. AT&T reps just got an internal email stating that they would be unable to take vacation time from 4/15-5/15 “due to projected increased traffic and an exciting new promotion/product launch.” We’re only 10 days away from the end of that time frame and with no Apple event in the next week or so, it seems highly unlikely that a new iPhone will launch. Then again, the only other time AT&T has done this was last year before the first iPhone launched. What do y’all think? Think some Apple event invites will start getting sent out in the next couple days? Or is this way too soon?

Vodafone to Bring iPhone to 10 Countries; No Exclusivity? TIM chimes in

In an announcement on Vodafone’s media relations page earlier this morning, the mega carrier let the cat out of the bag that it would be bringing the iPhone to market in ten countries later this year. Vodafone stated that it has just finalized a deal with Apple, but makes no mention of exclusivity in its announcement. Interesting. Certainly if the deal granted exclusive distribution to the carrier, it would have been mentioned. Here’s the full announcement which includes all of the countries encompassed by the new deal. Make sure you have a warm cup of coffee at hand because this read might take a while.

Vodafone today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets around the globe. Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network.

Right then. Short and to the point. “Later this year” would indicate that this deal covers the 3G iPhone in relevant markets and the lack of mention with regards to exclusivity would be right in line with what we’ve been hearing lately. Whatever the case, expect the net flurry of iPhone news to pick up pace – if that’s even possible – as we draw closer to D Day. What’s funny is that TIM in Italy put out a press release this morning saying they will indeed offer the iPhone. “Telecom Italia announced today it has signed a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Italy later this year.” Go figure.

Safari for Windows up, Mac down, iPhone rocks at Flickr

The latest Net Applications survey and data extracted from Flickr logs indicate that Safari’s Windows version tripled the browser’s market share, Microsoft is eating into Mac’s market share and the iPhone surpasses Nokia’s N95 in photo uploads to Flickr. The published numbers have limited scope but they allow us to draw some interesting conclusions.
