Turn your iPhone into a Wiimote or projectile with iFun

Is iFun cool? Yes, very much so. Is risking the livelihood of your iPhone or iPod Touch in the name of gaming a good idea? Well, the jury is still out on that one. As seen in the relatively cheesy video above, iFun is a gaming suite by SGN that allows users to connect to a computer and use an iPhone or iPod Touch as a motion-controller while playing games. It’s reportedly a bit laggy, but still a very cool use case for Apple’s touchy devices. Still, we have to recommend you tread with caution here as there’s a reason the Wiimote has a wrist strap – to prevent it from flying out of your hand and impaling your TV. It’s one thing to sacrifice a $30 Wiimote to the gods of gaming but it’ll be hard to shrug off a $200+ loss when that iPhone slips out of your hand and smashes all over your wall or desk. Our advice? Listen to Shaq: “The law of physics states that a body in motion stays in motion. And if you have two objects that meet in the air, the smaller object is going to fall much harder at the same rate of speed it was going.”

iPhone may be in WallMart

A little over a month ago we broke the news that Apple’s iPhone 3G would supposedly be coming to Wal-Mart on November 15th of this year. Now that the date has come and gone with no iPhone to be found, we thought an update was in order. We’re not sure if our sources had the date wrong or if there has been some sort of delay, but we’re still confident that the iPhone 3G is on its way to the nation’s biggest discount chain. We have word that many store managers have already been notified, and that a memo has gone out to select stores with information including a release date towards the end of December. A post-holiday release might indicate that the iPhone 3G will indeed be discounted at Wal-Mart once released, and perhaps Apple would rather keep holiday sales at the current price points. Apparently word is even hitting employees at this point – hit the jump for a call recorded by a BGR reader. We had no idea Gheorghe Muresan was working at Wal-Mart these days…

Update: It looks like Wal-Mart will begin selling the iPhone 3G on December 28th in select locations. When all is said and done, about 2,500 locations will offer the iPhone. We’re also getting word now that 69 Sam’s Club locations will offer the handset, also beginning on the 28th.

Voice Search Application From Google

Google announced on Tuesday a new iPhone application that allows you to make location based searches just by speaking a question into your iPhone. Your spoken question, “Where is the nearest Best Buy?” for example, is sent to Google’s server as a digital file and processed by Google’s server side voice recognition software. The converted query is then forwarded to Google’s search engine and the results are sent back to the handset, supposedly within seconds. Excellent! This is not a new concept as Microsoft already has its TellMe service, Yahoo has OneSearch and Nuance is in the process of developing its own Open Voice Search. What is interesting is Google’s choice of the iPhone and not Android for its launch platform which combines the iPhone, currently still the best selling handset in the US, with the world’s most popular search engine. Talk about bringing voice search to a large audience. The Google Mobile App with the new voice search is available now from the App store. Just to warn you, the voice search only supports U.S. English and only works with the iPhone. Sorry iPod Touch users, you need a microphone for this to work! If any of you iPhone owners out there test out the new Google voice search, give us a shout in the comments and let us know how it works for you. Hit the jump for a Google Video explaining the service.

Android jailbreak and Google

Google must have known this was coming. In the ever-present battle between mobile manufacturers and hackers, it’s always a game of cat and mouse. New OS build is released, hackers attack, hackers win, manufacturer patches – lather, rinse and repeat. Apple was welcomed to the game pretty quickly and so far the cycle has been pretty much in favor of the iPhone dev team; updated iPhone jailbreaks are typically in place even before new OS builds are even released into the wild. And so on to Android we go. Earlier this week, it was revealed that users could gain root access on the Android OS. The method for gaining access was extremely simple and made use of the PTerminal app available from the Android Market. No matter though, as Google’s response was lightning-fast and a patch is already being pushed out that prevents access.

We’ve been notified of this issue (Jailbreaking of Android) and have developed a fix. We’re currently working with our partners to push the fix out and updating the open source code base to reflect these changes.

OS RC30 is the new version number to look out for that includes the patch. Of course it’s surely only a matter of time before the fix is busted, the new bust is patched, etc. As open as the Android OS already is, it will be interesting to see what hackers come up with as far as giving users a reason to play the jailbreak game.

Apple steals, Nr. 2 spot from RIM in smartphone battle

The results are in and news now hitting the smartphone world is that Nokia is slipping down from the peak of the mountain while Apple and RIM work their way to the top. With only the iPhone and iPhone 3G, Apple has managed to step over RIM’s shoulders to take the number two spot in the smartphone world with 17.3% of the market share. RIM, however, isn’t too far behind with 15.2% and climbing with anticipation of the Storm’s release mounting. Nokia, meanwhile, can’t help but sit and watch as it sees its market share drop to 38.9% from 51.4% the year before. Apple is undoubtedly snatching up Nokia and RIM’s business with the iPhone 3G, having sold nearly 7 million units since its official release on July 11. With those sales, Apple is not just second in the smartphone war but it now accounts for 2.3% of the overall mobile phone market – not bad after just a year and a half in business! Still, with two up-and-comers battling and plenty of momentum, Nokia and the Symbian OS remain on top of the pile as the ones to beat. All they have to do now is figure out how to hold the other two down, and that is going to take something pretty big.

iPhone 2.2 screenshots leaked

While the rest of us wait around for the official release, some lucky Devs have tossed caution to the wind and ignored the binding clauses of their NDA to leak some screenshots of the upcoming iPhone 2.2. firmware update to the world. Among the goodies include a look at a redesign of the App Store to make it a bit more intuitive. The big news, however, is the addition of a Podcast tab to the iTunes store. Providing the ability to download and subscribe to podcasts on the go should mark a significant feature addition, and even better yet it appears that any podcast under 10MB will be available over the 3G network. Similar to the App store, files exceeding the 10MB limit will only be offered over Wi-Fi, but given the impressive strain on AT&T’s data network, we can’t say we’re surprised. As always, this is subject to change before official release, but the shots look polished enough that we’re confident in getting our hopes up for the final iteration.
